Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren

A Place to Deepen Our Faith

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1

Mission Statement

In September of 2003, the congregation of Highland Avenue approved a three to five year statement of our mission and goals, centered on the five key Christian values of faith, peace, community, welcome and service.

Love and Diversity: Congregational Response on Sexual Orientation

After a careful discernment process, as of May 22, 2007, the congregation has approved two statements that express its thinking and convictions on sexual orientation. They are intended to guide our actions and to let those outside our congregation know who we are. We worked to find a way to affirm the deep differences in the congregation and to honor the strong majority position. Therefore, we approved two statements. The first affirms the range of difference and agreement and pledges us to stay in fellowship and dialogue with one another. The second commits us to welcome and include those with a different sexual orientation and invites further dialogue with the goal of breaking down barriers. You can read the full text of the statements here (PDF format).

Weekly Meditation

“The earliest confession of the earliest followers of Jesus—Jesus is Lord—was not…primarily a theological confession of Jesus’ divinity, as many today assume; it was a very earthly declaration that Jesus, not Caesar, is the ultimate authority.”
